It was Saturday Morning and Mr. Postikit was hosting a fishing derby for the children and their families at a nearby park. Who do you think was there? The Ried children, the Shae children and the Faubert children!
Mr. Postikit said, “I want each team to go out there and get the biggest catch they can, the bigger, the better! Can you do that?” The children yelled, “Of course we can!” Mr. Postikit said, “alright, be back here in 2 hours and I will give out the awards. All the teams then went off to find a good spot.
Once everyone settled in and started fishing, Mr. Postikit walked around to see how everyone was doing. First, he came upon Mr. Faubert and Zach. Zach was motoring around so fast that ended up in the water twice, and Mr. Faubert had to fish him out. Mr. Postikit said, “How’s it going?” Mr. Faubert answered, “Zach knows you can’t catch any fish unless you get your bait wet, but he thinks he needs to take it in by hand!” Mr. Postikit said, “Keep up the good work Mr. Faubert, it looks like Zach is having a great time!”
Next, Mr. Postikit came upon Sean and Ricky. They seemed to be having a little trouble baiting their hook. Suddenly Sean yelled “YOUCH!” Ricky ran over and said, “Sean are you alright? I have my cell phone, should I call 911, should I run for Mr. Postikit, what should I do?”
Sean grimaced in pain, and said, “please just help me get this hook out of my finger, it is not bad, then put a medicated adhesive strip on it. Ricky helped him, and Sean was very thankful.
Next Mr. Postikit came up upon Maggie and Annie. Maggie was determined to win, and she cast her hook way out in the water and it began to sink. Pretty soon, as she was reeling it in, it seemed to pull back. Maggie got excited! She saw Mr. Postikit near by and said, “Mr. Postikit, Mr. Postikit, I think I got the big one! Boy its pulling hard, I can hardly reel it in.” Mr. Postikit said, “keep trying Maggie,” and she did.
Five minutes later out of the water came and old boot! Annie said, “it looks like a size 12 to me, it is big Maggie.” Maggie was not very pleased!
After two hours, Mr. Postikit blew a horn to call everyone back for the Award Ceremony. The funny thing was no one had any fish. Mr. Postikit spoke quietly for a moment with Mrs. Postikit and soon knew what to do.
Mr. Postikit stood before the group and said, “Would Mr. Faubert and Zach come forward. Mr. Faubert, we all know how much you love fishing, and yet Zach kept you on your toes every second. I want to present you with the Loving Father award for placing Zach’s fun over your own and making this a day he really enjoyed.”
“Would Ricky and Sean come up please. Ricky, I want to give you the Loyal Friend award. When Sean stuck his finger with the fish hook, you were ready to help in any way possible. Before I knew it, Sean was back fishing, although he didn’t catch anything, I think he had fun with his friend.
Next Mr. Postikit said, “Maggie and Annie, would you come up? Maggie, I want to give you the award for the biggest catch.” Annie said, “Mr. Postikit, Maggie didn’t catch any fish, just a soggy boot.” Mr. Postikit said, “Now that I think of it, I told everyone to get the biggest catch, not the biggest fish, so Maggie gets the prize since no one else caught anything!”
After the awards were given out, Annie said, “Mr. Postikit, Mr. Postikit if no one caught any fish, why do they call it fishing?” Mr. Postikit said, “Annie, if everyone caught fish, they would call it catching, not fishing don’t you think?”
As it turned out, everyone had a wonderful day together, and the biggest thing they caught was friendship.
